Today over 3 billion people use social media each month. This means that over 42% of the global population are using social media on a regular base. This growth is predicted to only continue to rise in the coming years. Just think what this means for businesses, this is a huge opportunity of companies to reach their audience in a highly targeted way.
Who is using social media?
Breaking down each social network you will find out how to reach your audience and what platform is going to best suited for you. Looking at the infographic you can see that to reach an older audience you will want to target Facebook to reach your target audience. This information along with your own tracking and performance indicators you can make the biggest impact. This knowledge might also let you know where to focus.
Keep in mind your brand as well each platform responds differently based on the content you are posting.
For example one of the brands I work with was no doing well on instagram but was doing amazing on linkedin but ways doing terrible on instagram. We conclude that our products where no were photogenic but are audience cared about the content over the visual. This ultimately led to use cooling down our instagram campaign to 1 post a month and amped up our Linkedin account to daily post.
What are the most popular social media platforms?
- 79% of all social media users are on Facebook
- 32% of all social media users are on Instagram
- 24%of all social media users are on Twitter
Chances are that most people today are using all 3 of these platforms but this study takes in to account all social media users across the nation taking into account frequency.
So what can we learn for these facts…
- If you aren’t using Facebook then you are missing out on a connecting with a huge audience with the best range of ages using this platform.
- Instagram is all about pretty photos and it may not be right for all brands and companies.
- Twitter is a great place to do campaign testing because the post lifetime is only a few hours and you can post more often. At the end of the day Twitter is a great listening device but not the most effective when trying to generate leads.
It often takes a lot of convincing when asking for money for a campaign, especially when ifs for social media. Many people do not understand the power of creating a brand on social media. I think people are pleasantly surprised at the impact they can make with very little cost or effort using social media marketing. The cost can be as low as 3 dollars to reach over 1,000 people. Just imagine the impact you could make with a strong targeted campaign.
One of my favorite entrepreneurs Jordan and Pete often brag about how many leads the gain for a five to ten dollar campaign. (They also offer training on how to run social media ad campaigns.) The benefit of doing advertisements on social media is that you get to decide exactly how much you want to spend. Yess! you are in power! You set the daily weekly and monthly budgets and once it is maxed out your ad will stop running. This can be a great way to dip your toe in without a huge risk.
What media makes the biggest impact on social media?
This is a highly debated topic but the results are in video has the highest engagement rate. People want the content as fast as they can which is why photos are the next top performing content.
